James H. Wilder died of cancer on March 22, 1993 surrounded by his family.
Scott wrote this on the morning of his first Father's Day without his dad.

G.I. Jim

What would I say to you today
If you were here on this Father’s Day?
Would I thank you for the things you bought me?
No. For the things you taught me.
Things you left behind in me
  Like honesty and integrity
And truthfulness and so much more
Are here because you came before.
I’d say, "I want to be a man like you,
  A man faithful and true
To God and country and family,
A man like Dad I’d like to be."
That’s what I’d say to you today.
What would I give to you today
If you were here on this Father’s Day?
Would I wrap a belt or shirt or tie?
No. I’d say, "Let’s you and me try
To get away together sometime soon---
Coffee or lunch, just me and you.
Nothing big, but let’s do it soon.
How about tomorrow morning or today at noon?"
Time was your best gift to me,
You shared it so unselfishly
Today I’d give some back to you
And get some in return from you
(I guess that’s how that works).
That’s what I’d give to you today
If you were here on this Father’s Day.

Parent/Baby Dedication Day at church

I miss you every day, sweet Dad,
But I’m strengthened that we never had
A fight or rift beyond the normal ones
That come between a wise father and youthful son.
My love for things you loved has grown.
I miss you Dad. I‘d always known
It’d come too soon for me, this rest,
Because in you I had the best.
I know it now, but knew it then---
You weren’t just my dad, you were my friend.

What is a Dad?

- he wakes up first in the morning and is the last one to lock up

- he’s learned that doing what he thought he wanted to do
is less important than spending time with you

- he has a way of making you feel important

- he calls you from work

- he lets you twirl around in the chair behind his desk

- he just knows things....how to fix things....how things work

- has a hat that smells just like him

- loves God more than his wife, his wife more than his kids
and kids more than himself

- he’s more than a biological sire to an offspring....he’s the
provider and protector and teacher

- he knows that values are caught not taught
and leads rather than preaches

- he works hard and prays hard and loves things in you
that you may never understand

- checks under the bed before you go to sleep and leaves
the door open a bit if that makes you feel better

- he’s the one who runs beside your bike that first time
without the training wheels

- a father is someone who believes that no man is good
enough for his daughter and then swears his grandchildren
are the smartest kids in the world

- he’s the one who cuts the bait, kills the bugs,
and tries to work on his car

- he mows the lawn and then sits and looks at it as
if it were hung in a museum

- he holds you tight, kisses your neck and

- he cups his hand so you can take a drink

- He’s all of these things and more....he’s "Dad"
